What is Vedic Numerology
Vedic numerology — classically Aṅka Jyotiṣa, the “science of numbers” — reads a human life through the single digits 1 to 9. It grows from the same root as Jyotiṣa (Vedic astrology) and shares its core idea: the nine cosmic forces the sages called the Navagraha, the nine planets, move through every life and show up in the numbers a person is born with.
- Each number is not just a quantity — it is the signature of a planet.
- When a number appears in your chart, it brings the whole nature of that planet: the Sun's authority, the Moon's tenderness, Saturn's discipline, Mars's fire.
- So reading the numbers is reading the planets — and you can do it with nothing more than a date of birth. No telescope, no exact time or place of birth needed.
Numerology isn't one tradition. The common systems each read something slightly different:
- Pythagorean (Western) — turns the letters of your name into numbers; reads personality and life-path.
- Lo Shu (Chinese) — drops your birth-date digits into a magic square and reads mostly what is missing.
- Chaldean — reads a name by the sound of its syllables.
- Vedic (Aṅka Jyotiṣa) — borrows the grid idea from Lo Shu, but every number is a living planet, and it carries its own timing system (the dasha, or planetary periods).
The first three are wonderful for understanding character — but they mostly describe who you are. Vedic goes one step further.
- Because each number is a real planet with a fixed nature, its effect is specific, not a vague vibration.
- Because the tradition tracks dasha — the periods when each planet's energy switches on — it can say when a chapter of life is likely to open, not only what it holds.
- That "what and when" is what sets Vedic numerology apart when the question is timing and prediction.
Everything starts from the date of birth — the one fact of a life that never changes. From it the tradition draws:
- Basic number (Mūlāṅka) — from the day of birth; the instinctive self, your first reflex and temperament.
- Destiny number (Bhāgyāṅka) — from the whole date; the longer road a life is drawn to walk.
- The grid — the remaining digits arranged into a small map of the mind and life, each number present, doubled or absent, at ease or under strain.
Read together these describe a person with real fullness — character and gifts, where life asks more of them, the work that suits them, health and relationships — and, through the dasha, the timing by which each unfolds. Two people born the same day are never quite the same chart, because the full date and the way its numbers fall belong to each alone.

Numbers
Everything you read a chart with starts here. You'll meet the nine numbers and the planet behind each one, learn the three numbers a date of birth hands you, and master the single rule — polarity — that decides whether a number shows its bright face or its shadow. By the end you can look at any date and name what it holds.
- Each of the nine numbers is a planet, with a bright face and a shadow face.
- A date gives three core numbers: Basic (the day), Destiny (the whole date) and the Personal Year.
- Polarity is fixed at birth and decides which face of a number shows.
- Numbers also combine — read two together for a sharper picture.
1.1 · The nine numbers & their planets
The whole language is just nine words — the numbers 1 to 9 — and each one is a planet. When a number turns up in a chart it brings the entire nature of its planet with it: the Sun's authority, the Moon's feeling, Mars's drive, Saturn's patience. Every planet carries two faces, a bright one and a shadow one, and which face you see is decided by polarity (Lesson 1.4). Learn these nine and you can read almost anything.

1.2 · The core numbers — Basic, Destiny & Personal Year
A date of birth hands you three numbers before you draw anything, and they are the backbone of every reading — so it is worth being able to work them out in your head. The trick behind all three is digit-reduction: keep adding the digits until a single number is left (28 → 2+8 = 10 → 1+0 = 1).
Reduce the day of birth. It is the instinctive self — how a person reacts before they think. Example: born on the 17th → 1+7 = 8; born on the 4th → it simply stays 4.
Reduce all the digits of the full date — day, month and year together. It is the longer road a life keeps returning to, and unlike a mood it never changes. Example: 17-09-1950 → 1+7+0+9+1+9+5+0 = 32 → 3+2 = 5.
Add the day + month + the digits of this year, then reduce. It marks the theme of the year you are in, and it rolls over on every birthday. Example: for a 17-09 birthday in 2025 → 1+7+0+9+2+0+2+5 = 26 → 2+6 = 8 — a year of effort and reward.
1.3 · Supportive numbers & planetary attributes
The Basic and Destiny are the headline, but every other digit that lands in the grid still counts — these are the supportive numbers. They are lighter in weight, yet they colour the whole reading, like supporting actors who quietly change a scene.
And because each number is a planet, it always carries two faces — so the same digit reads very differently depending on which one is switched on. For example: a bright 1 (Sun) is a confident, respected leader, while a shadowed 1 is all ego and stubbornness. A bright 5 (Mercury) is quick, witty and good with money; a shadowed 5 is restless and scattered. A bright 8 (Saturn) is disciplined and builds things that last; a shadowed 8 feels only delay and pressure. Learning both faces of all nine is what makes a reading accurate — and polarity, next, is how you decide which face to use.
1.4 · Positive & negative numbers — polarity
A number's polarity — whether its bright or its shadow face shows — is decided by its count in the birth grid:

1.5 · Number combinations
Numbers rarely act alone — most readings turn on how a pair behaves together, usually the Basic and the Destiny. Some pairs amplify each other, some balance, and some clash. The Vedic Grid

- The grid is a fixed 3×3 map; each number sits in its own cell.
- You'll know exactly which digits go in and which are left out.
- Repeated numbers stack, and missing numbers matter as much as present ones.

2.1 · Drawing the Vedic grid
The Vedic grid (numeroscope) is a fixed 3×3 layout — not the Lo Shu square. The cells never move; a number simply appears in its own cell as many times as it occurs in the date. Reading the grid is reading which planets are present, doubled or absent in a life.

Which digits go in: the day digits + the month digits + the last two digits of the year + the Destiny number. Then three rules: (1) exclude the century pair (19/20); (2) exclude all zeros; (3) add the Basic number only when the day is two digits. Repeats stack in the same cell — three 1s become "111".

2.2 · Reading the grid — the planes
Once a grid is drawn, the very first thing you read from it are its planes. The nine cells aren't loose — they line up into rows, columns and diagonals, and each line describes an area of the mind and life. A full three-number line is especially strong and gets its own name — a yoga. Look back at any chart you drew above: the lines that are complete, broken or empty are already telling you where the person is strong and where life will ask more of them.
